Benford Carlton “Ben” Thompson, 65, died May 5, 2009, at his residence in Okolona. He was born on Jan. 5, 1944, in Amory to Johnny Merl Thompson and Thelma Francis Thompson Riggan. He graduated from Amory High School and served for three years in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Little Rock from 1961-1965. He saw action at the Bay of Pigs. He retired in February 2009 after 32 years service to Tecumseh Products. He had resided in Okolona for 13 years, moving there from the Tupelo area where he lived 18 years. He enjoyed life fully and enjoyed large meals with family and friends, laughter, riding his trike bike and reading, but most important in his life were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he adored and doted on. He was a Baptist.
A private family funeral service was held with Holland-Harris Funeral Directors in charge. Cremation followed.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Thompson of Okolona; four sons, Johnny Edward Thompson of Springfield, Ill., Tommy Dale Thompson (Cindy) of Aberdeen, Myles A. Terry of Okolona and Samuel E. Terry (Wanda) of Laredo, Texas; five daughters, Cynthia Morton of Shannon, Miriam Souter of Baldwyn, Carol Patterson (Johnny) of Shannon, Kathy Terry of Tupelo and Shannon Baswell (Robert) of Shannon; 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janelle Payne (Robert) of Booneville and Darlene Heidbreder of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Bobby Thompson (Utaka) of Pensacola, Fla., and Douglas Riggan (Charlie) of Robertsdale, Ala.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Bernard Ray “Dagwood” Riggan, who raised him.
