Smiths and Waltons of Newton County and churches they may have attended

I am researching my gg grandfather, Joel Patterson, who lived for a time in Newton County,MS. He was there from the mid 1840's until sometime after 1860, during that time he loved near the families of both wives shown. He was first married to Sarah Walton, daughter of James Walton and Nancy Miller Walton. Sarah died sometime prior to 1860. He then married Matilda Smith, oldest daughter of Samuel Smith and Barbara Kelley Smith. While living in Newton County he was located near Union, practically on the Newton/Neshoba County lines. Does anyone know of the churches in that area and if any still keep old records on hand. Many of this family were buried in the Abney New Ireland Cemetery. Any help would be appreciated.
