Requesting driving directions to the old Calhoun Cemetery (sometimes referred to as the Byrd Cemetery) located west of Shuqualak. Exactly how far from the town of Shuqualak? How far beyond the intersection with the road that goes north to the Cotton Cemetery? Is the cemetery visible from the road? What landmarks to look for? In the 1975 book Tombstone Inscriptions of Noxubee County, Mississippi, Mr. E. Q. Richards stated on page 253 that the cemetery “lies on the North side of the road leading from Shuqualak to Butler Church in Sec. 8, T-13-N, R-16-E. The cemetery is overgrown, but is fenced.” In the 1986 book Dancing Rabbit, Mr. Broox Sledge stated on page 187 that the cemetery is “About three miles west of Shuqualak.” In the first chapter of this book on page 7, Mr. Sledge wrote: “I was out west of Shuqualak one afternoon searching for an old cemetery (Calhoun or Bird) someone had told me about but I couldn’t find it and started driving back. I stopped when I met a car, got out and flagged it down. The young man who was driving fortunately knew where the cemetery was. Using his directions, I went back and found the tiny bit of sentimental ground hidden from anyone driving by in a car. I simply had failed to get out at the right place to find it. Thank you, Edwin Flake, for your help.” I would appreciate any assistance with more specific directions to this abandoned cemetery. I do not find it on the U.S. topographical map nor on the MS Dept. of Transportation map of Noxubee County. Buried there in unmarked graves are William Henry Dugan (1814-1867) and his first wife Mary Dugan Dugan (1815-1857). William was the son of John J. Dugan and Nancy Shell Dugan of Newberry County, SC. Mary was the daughter of Robert A. Dugan and Ruth Chambers Dugan of Newberry County, SC. Robert A. Dugan moved with his children from South Carolina to Noxubee County and probably was buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery. William Henry Dugan’s second wife Mary Jane White Dugan (1832-1889) was buried in the cemetery at Bethel Methodist Church in Oktibbeha County. Thanks in advance for any help with driving directions to the Calhoun Cemetery. Notify Administrator about this message?
