WILLIE JAMES SMITH was born to the late Mr. Walter Smith and Cora Smith on August 8, 1917 in Batesville, MS. He was one of four children, three of which preceded him in death, two sisters and one brother. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. Later in life, he joined Salem Gilfield Church and served as an usher. He worked as a laborer in steel fabrication, from which he retired. After ill health, he departed this life at MidSouth Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 91 years on May 16, 2008. He leaves to mourn his passing, a daughter, Rosie Houston and son-in-law, Willie Houston, Jr.; grandson, Willie Bernard Houston III; great-granddaughter, Corneceiya Pirtle of Memphis; a son, Lawrence Parnell of California; five nephews, Willie Earnest Mills (Connie) of Satellite Beach, FL, Ricky Mills (Bernice) of Grand Prairie, TX, Robert Mills, Andrew Mills and Larry Bills (Dorothy), all of Memphis; one niece, Bertha Mills of Memphis, 14 great-nieces, 15 great-nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.,m. Friday, May 23, and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, both at M.J. Edwards, Airways.
