Family legend has it the my great grandfather A.W. Fain (Ansel Watkins)was killed while escorting some prisoners in Pearl River. Not sure if they meant the county or the river. This would have been about 1900-1910.
Not sure if he was working as a deputy or sheriff, but may having been escorting these prisioners from TX when they escaped. He supposedly was shot in the head.
He disappeared and the family never knew what became of him. there were also rumors that a son-in-law may have killed him and everything was hushed up.
To confuse the issue more, he may have been going by the name of Walter Fane at the time.
We would just like to know what did become of him and where he's buried if possible. Your help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
