I am searching for information about a man born in (probably) Elbert County, GA in 1829 to Mary Susan WHITE who married William A. Herring (died in 1829 and mother & son moved to Pontotc with Mary's father, SHELTON WHITE). JOHN B. HERRING, must have been a natural leader ... as a student at Mississippi University in 1848 he founded the Sigma Alpha Fraternity. Then in January, 1861 he was a representative from Pontotoc County to the special legislative session where Mississippi seceeded from the Union. Finally, he joined the 5th Army of Mississippi as a Major and fought all during the War, finally becoming a LT. COL. by the time the War ended. I am not sure if John B. Herring from Pontotoc County, MS lived much beyond the War or not, as I cannot find him anywhere. But I would love to know where he went and if he ever married! His mother, Mary Susan WHITE HERRING was a daughter of SHELTON WHITE from Elbert County, GA ... moving to Pontotoc in the mid 1830's. Is he buried in Pontotoc County, MS?? Is his mother buried there?? (Please do a lookup for me, someone!). Mary Susan WHITE HERRING was a sister to BOLLING or BOWLING A. WHITE, a physician born about 1815 in GA who was still in the 1870 census for Pontotoc, MS. Can anyone help me find these people beyond 1860 ... and where they might be buried?? THANKS for any and all help. Pat Iverson Notify Administrator about this message?
