Billy Brooks Simmons, a sophomore student at Itawamba Junior College from Ecru, was drowned April 21, 1956 when the boat that he and two companions were in turned over on Twin Ridge Landing on Sardis Lake when the youth were running a trot line. The accident occurred in 15-foot deep water throwing all three into the water. The young student, age 19, attempted to swim to shore but failed to make it. Funeral services were held April 22 from the Ecru Baptist Church with burial in the Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home of Ecru was in charge.
Survivors included his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Clovis Simmons; a brother, Jimmy Simmons, age six; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Simmons and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kelly, all of Ecru.
