Migrations to Pontotoc from North Carolina 1840s thru 1870s

While researching a number of families in collateral lines to my ancestors from Harnett County, North Carolina, I have found several who migrated to Pontotoc and then returned to NC in the decades from 1840 thru 1870. Does anyone familiar with the history of Pontotoc know what may have attracted these families? It's obvious to me that Pontotoc is a beautiful area, and I'm certain that, with Land Grants, etc., there were ample opportunities to better one's life during that time. However, I find it most intriguing that so many migrated to this one given area from one other given area. Also, the migrations occurred prior to the Civil War and afterwards. Any help in understanding these events will be greatly appreciated!
