Junior Hollis Smith, 78, died July 10, 2008, at the Kosciusko Veterans Home in Kosciusko. He was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Jumpertown to Jodie Owen Smith and Mattie Claire Geno Smith. He was a first sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Kosciusko and a graduate of Mississippi State University. He retired in 1986 from the Mississippi Forestry Commission. He was a past state commander and National Council member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star.
Graveside services were at Tippah Memorial Gardens in Ripley.
Survivors included his wife of 15 years, Rita Watson Smith; two sons, Michael J. Smith (Marie Elise) of Ridgeland and Jodie Smith (Debbie Ratcliff) of Kosciusko; one stepdaughter, Suzanne McDonough (Clay) of Jackson; one brother, J.A. Smith of Jonesboro, Ark.; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Chaffin of Booneville; one sister, Mamie Fae Ward of Booneville; six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Joyce Chaffin Smith, in 1991; and his parents.
