Is this Alexander Gray and Susannah Vanderbilt? It looks like the same George W. Gray that married Louisa Mariam Brassell in 1869. My ancestor was Louisa's sister. Louisa's brother (Edward Brassell) married Fannie Ann Youngblood who was the daughter of Nancy Jane Gray (d/o Alexander Gray and Susannah Vanderbilt).

I'll write a cousin of mine that descends from Nancy Jane Gray Youngblood. Perhaps she has information on the brother James and his wife.

I didn't see any McDowells on the 1850 Scott County, but you can check it online at this link:

Scott County marriage records start in 1872 (there was a courthouse fire) so there's no help there. If James Gray served in the Confederate Army, Jane may have filed for a widow's pension (check whatever state she lived in). That may give a maiden name, but doubtful. Otherwise, have you checked for a death certificate for her?
