Sumner - MARIANNE THAXTON WHITTEN, 87, died Monday, August 21, 2006 at Tallahatchie General Hospital in Charleston. She was a member of Sumner Presbyterian Church. She was born on July 26, 1919 in Crystal Springs, MS to Elma Jones Thaxton and Gordon Arnold Thaxton. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wallace Whitten, Jr., and her brother, Gordon Arnold Thaxton, Jr. Survivors include sons, John W. Whitten, III and wife, Mona, and Thax Whitten and wife, Libby; grandchildren, John Whitten, IV, Robert Whitten and Ellen Whitten. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She was a member and past-president of Plantation Garden Club. She was a 66 year member of Daughters of the American Revolution. A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24 at Sumner Presbyterian Church. Visitation will follow the service at the church.
