Vernon Y Davis, 82, died April 20, 2008, at the Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. He was born May 12, 1925, in the Gravestown community to E.Y. and Emma Davis. He attended Shady Grove School.He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Upon returning from the war, he married Ruth Pegram of Ripley. Before retiring he owned Davis Motor Company, enjoyed buying and selling timber, and was a charter stockholder of the Ripley Funeral Home.He served as deacon for over 50 years and until his death was an active Gideon in the jail ministry.He happily lived his life serving God and leading his adoring family by example.
Services were at Ripley Funeral Home with burial in Tippah Memorial Garden.
Survivors included his wife of 61 years, Ruth P. Davis; three daughters, Sally Bennett (Mike) of Terry, Jane Gair (Tyson) of Starkville and Carol Mauney (Phillip) of Ripley; her grandchildren, Jenny Jones (David) of Tupelo, Spencer Holley (Cara) of Madisonville, Ky., Taylor Gair of Starkville, Alex Mauney of Oxford, Molly Mauney and Bentley Mauney, both of Ripley; and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Nora Orman, Grady Lence, Elizabeth Renick and Nyleen Autry; two brothers, Rubel Davis and Carnie Davis; and one grandson, Samuel Davis Mauney.
