Negley Frank England, 96, died September 20, 2007, at his home at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, Miss.

A memorial service was held on Sept. 29 at Fondren Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS.

Neg was born October 17, 1910 in Palouse, Washington, the oldest son of Clyde Duval England and Mildred Negley England. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bob England, a sister, Beth Bollong, and his wife Jane Russell England.

He is survived by his children Kim and Mike England and Barbara and Bob England, all of Jackson; his grandchildren Chris, Rob and Zach England of Hattiesburg; Danielle England of Tupelo; and Lindsay, Jeremy and Elizabeth England of Jackson, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, and attended the University of Washington on a football scholarship. He excelled in a variety of sports, including boxing and track and field. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. When he graduated in 1935 he became a competitive snow skier – a skill which led to work with Naval Intelligence in counterespionage for five years.

He then joined the Navy and served as a Gunnery Commander aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Hollandia in the South Pacific until the end of World War II. He retired from the Naval Reserve after attaining the rank of Commander.

Neg and Jane started England Sailboats and Yachting Service in their home as a hobby in the early 1960s. When Neg retired from Carrier Corporation in 1972, he was able to devote all his time to England Sailboats, and they moved the business to a permanent location near the reservoir. Neg was one of the nine charter members of the Jackson Yacht Club when it began at Lake Hico in 1958. He was the third commodore of the Yacht Club and England Harbor was named in his honor.

In May 2004, Neg received a Citation for Distinguished and Exceptional Service from the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. It was presented by members and alumni of the chapter at Mississippi State University, where he helped the chapter raise money to buy their first fraternity house. He was a member of the United States Power Squadron and the Jackson Yacht Club.

He was an active member of Fondren Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. At the time of his death he was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
