Tunica - MARY RUTH FUNK, 97, died at the Tunica Nursing Home Friday, October 19, 2007. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-3 p.m. at National Funeral Home with Services beginning at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Reverend Ray Branch will be the Minister. Mrs. Funk was born on July 21, 1910, in Harrell, AR. She was the last of twelve children born to Julian and Loula Martin Abernathy. When the United States entered World War II, most of the young, able-bodied men were shipped overseas, leaving behind only the women and older or disabled men to keep the nation going. Factories on the west coast were desperate for workers, so many people headed west. More than six million women from all backgrounds, and from all over the country, labored at industrial jobs. Mary became a true "Rosie the Riveter," building wings on C-47 airplanes, the cargo version of the DC-3. Mrs. Funk who was a longtime resident of Duncan, was a wellknown seamstress who enjoyed making clothes. She was a homemaker, a former member of the First Christian Church in Clarksdale and a member of the Eastern Star. Preceded in death by her husband, Ovid B. Funk, she is survived by her daughters, Linda Boschert (Harry) of Greenville, Shirley Tate of Madison, and Kathleen Gann (Bob) of Tunica. She also leaves six grandchildren, Lisa Downum (Rick) of Bella Vista, AR, Kristin McLaughlin (David) of Hoover, AL, Kimberly Phillips of Cabot, AR, Dr. Kenneth Boschert (Lynn) of Ballwin, MO, Ben Brooks (Danise) of Suwanee, GA and Chris Brooks (Kim) of Madison, MS. Great-grandchildren are Tyler, Ashtin and Sarah Downum of Bella Vista, AR, Gannon McLaughlin of Hoover, AL, Mark and Madeline Phillips of Cabot, AR, Erin and Austin Brooks of Suwanee, GA.
