James Gwin "Gus" Bagley, 84, of Athens, died Saturday morning, Feb. 23, 2008 at his home. He was a native of Tunica, Mississippi, and was a son of the late Byron Richard Bagley and the late Rebe Alla Smith Bagley. A memorial service and interment of ashes was conducted Tuesday, February 26 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Athens, with the Rev. G. Hendree Harrison officiating. Mr. Bagley was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he was a licensed Chalice Bearer and served three times as Senior Warden. He was past president of the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee and served on the Board of Directors of the Episcopal Commission of Southeast Tennessee. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club of Athens and is inscribed on the Tablet of Honor of the International Kiwanis Foundation. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum. Mr. Bagley served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a corporal in the Intelligence Division, seeing action in New Guinea, Guadalcanal and the Philippine Islands and was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Victory Medal. He earned a BS in Business Administration in 1949 from Mississippi State College (now Mississippi State University). He retired from the Public Works Department of the City of Athens in 1988 and was a member of the Public Works Association. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Fisher Bagley of Athens; one son, James G. Bagley Jr., and daughter-in-law, Melissa Johnson Bagley, of Powder Springs, Ga.; one daughter, Elizabeth B. Carlsten, and son-in-law, Bruce E. Carlsten, of Los Alamos, N.M.; two brothers Byron Richard Bagley Jr. and William Dabney Bagley, both of Tunica, Miss.; three brothers-in-law, Alan Moorer Fisher Jr., William Boylyne Fisher II and John David Fisher; and five grandchildren, Miles E. and Scott G. Carlsten and Katelynn E., Andrew J. and Hunter R. Knutson. Notify Administrator about this message?
