Reverend Dermot Twomey, SCJ, died at St. Michael’s Community House in Nesbit, Miss. on March 25, 2008.

Viewing of the body was held on Thursday, March 27, followed by Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Southaven. Services were also held in Hales Corner at Sacred Heart Monastery in Wisconsin.

Father Twomey was born in County Kerry, Ireland. He was a member of the priests of the Sacred Heart, a worldwide Catholic religious community of priests and brothers. In 1954, he professed vows with the community as a member of the British-Irish Province. He served as a religious brother for many years.

Father Twomey felt called to the priesthood following Vatican II. He came to the U.S. to study at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corner, Wisconsin and was ordained to the priesthood in 1976.

During his studies, he joined the U.S. Province. After serving in Texas and Michigan, Father Twomey came to Mississippi in 1988, where he lived until his death.

In Mississippi, Father Twomey ministered at Christ the King Church in Southaven, Sacred Heart Church in Walls, St. Gregory the Great Church in Senatobia and St. Anthony Mission in Tunica. He served at the last three locations until his retirement in 2007. Locally, Father Twomey was active in Habitat for Humanity, serving on the board of directors for many years.

He is survived by his sister, Veronica Lee of Cape Cod, Mass.; two brothers-in-law, James Neary of New Jersey and Lawrence Barbour of England; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Twomey of Ireland; 18 nieces and nephews; 39 great nieces and nephews, numerous relatives and friends and members of the U.S. Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick Twomey of Ireland and three sisters, Maureen Suckling of Massachusetts, Kathleen Barbour of England and Eileen Neary of New Jersey.
