Mary Louise Campbell Gregory went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, April 27 at the age of 97. She was born on July 20, 1910 in New Albany, Miss. to Mary Louise Montroy Campbell and Homer L. Campbell. Due to the early death of her mother, she was raised by her beloved stepmother, Sallie (Allie) Friar Campbell.

Graveside Services were held Tuesday, April 29 at Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Gregory attended school in New Albany and graduated in education from Blue Mountain College, where she was selected a beauty all four years, Miss Blue Mountain College and was the editor of her college yearbook. She earned her master’s degree from Mississippi State University.

She met her husband, Paul Edwin Gregory, in Pace, Miss., where she was teaching English and Speech in the high school.

They lived in California and Washington State throughout her husband’s professional baseball career. During the war, they lived in Oklahoma on a Naval Air Gunnery Base.

After the war, they returned to Mississippi, settling in Starkville. She returned to her teaching career and her husband assumed head of the Physical Education Department and coached baseball at Mississippi State University.

She taught English and Speech for many years at Starkville High School and Starkville Academy, earning several honors, one of which was a Star Teacher. She was truly a “teacher.” She gave to all who knew her a mastery of the English language, an appreciation of poetry and a love of literature. She taught in the school system 22 years, but was a teacher all her life.

She took an active part in the community and was involved in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, teaching Sunday School and in several civic organizations. Her hobbies involved a long term bridge club with dear friends, numerous Bible studies, gardening, traveling and antiquing. She had a special love for “Mary Gregory” Glassware.

She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Starkville and presently was a member of the Tunica United Methodist Church. The family is very appreciative of the love and care that was given during her stay at Flowers Glen in Clarksdale, Miss.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years and her great grandson, Gregory Paul Threadgill.

Survivors included her daughters Janet Flowers (Dick) of Tunica and Linda Threadgill (George) of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Beau Gregory (Kathy) of Tunica; grandchildren Bowen Flowers and Mattson Flowers of Clarksdale, Campbell Melton of Tunica, Greg Threadgill and Jennifer Tucei of Pensacola, Fla., Jonathan Threadgill of Atlanta, Ga., Kate Green and Meg Patterson of Washington, D.C. and Paul Gregory III of Birmingham, Ala and 14 great grandchildren.
