Betty Jean Baty Sturgill was born in Memphis, Tenn. on April 29, 1930 and passed away at the Tunica Nursing Home on April 19, 2008, after a long illness. She was married to the late James H. Sturgill and lived in Kingsport, Tenn. for over 25 years. She was a also a long-time resident of Knoxville, Tenn.
Betty was always interested in helping others. In Kingsport, she worked at the Holstein Valley Community Hospital. She acquired her accreditation as a respiratory therapy technician and helped to start the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit at East Tennessee State Baptist Hospital in Knoxville.
She is survived by a daughter, Olga Pifer of Knoxville; five sons, Jim Sturgill (Lynn) of Tunica, Luther Bryan Sturgill (Jill) and Matthew Sturgill (Laura Lee) of Knoxville, Mark Sturgill (Candy) of Kingsport and Daniel Sturgill (Diane) of Fort Smith, Ark; a brother, Fred Baty (Deena) of Memphis; a sister, Gladys Daughtridge of Wilson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass and burial were held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn.
