Jeff Wheeler, 68, retired schoolteacher and coach, died June 3, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto. Mr. Wheeler was born Feb. 1, 1940 in Sledge, Miss. to the late Jack and Edna Wheeler. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church. “Coach” Wheeler served the community in many ways, including serving on the Southaven Planning Commission, the DeSoto County Crimestoppers Board, the Southaven Police Department VIPs (Volunteer in Policing), Bancorp South Community Advisor Board, and was a founding member of the Northwest Mississippi Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He was also a Volunteer Fire Firghter for the Southaven Volunteer Fire Department. While a teacher at Byhalia High School, his team won the Commercial Appeal Stock Market in junior achievement. He was an educator at Hope Sullivan School when it served kindergarten through eighth grades and held numerous other teaching positions across Mississippi. He spent 22 years teaching and coaching at Byhalia High School. Services were June 5 at First Baptist Church in Southaven with burial in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Southaven. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Geraldine “Sissy” Lee Wheeler of Southaven; three sons, Jeff D. Wheeler (Suzy) of Jackson, Miss., Jerald Wheeler (Gina) of Southaven, Jody Wheeler (Christine) of Southaven; one daughter,Jackie W. Nichols (Keith) of Walls; a brother, Bill Wheeler (June) of Tunica; one sister, Jackie W. Carver (Jimmy) of Pope, Miss. and six grandchildren. Notify Administrator about this message?
