Troy Samuel "Sammy" Pickens Jr., 58, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born June 18, 1949, in New Albany to Troy Samuel Pickens Sr. and Laney Harmon Pickens. He was a graduate of East Union High School, Northeast Mississippi Community College, the University of Mississippi, the Mississippi Highway Patrol Cadet School, the Institute of Police Technology & Management at the University of North Florida, and the FBI National Academy. He began his career as a Trooper in Natchez. He later was tranferred to New Albany, where he was an accident reconstruction specialist until he was promoted to investigator for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. He later was promoted to MBI district supervisor in the Hattiesburg district. He was transferred back to the New Albany district as a district supervisor before his retirement. He was a member of the New Albany/Union County drug task force prior to his illness. He also worked at the Union County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the New Albany Presbyterian church, where he was an active deacon, Sunday school teacher and teacher for the Wednesday night junior high school boys youth group. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 71. Services were at the New Albany Presbyterian Church with burial in Hopewell Cemetery. United Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements. Survivors included his wife, Linda McDonald Pickens of New Albany; two daughters, Donna Pickens Tutor (David) and Deanna Pickens Lewis (Cole), both of New Albany; one sister, Betty Pickens Shettles (Tommy) of New Albany; six grandchildren.
