Joseph Earl Akins, 62, died April 8, 2008, at his home in New Albany. He was retired from the United States Army with 24 years of service. He served in the Vietnam War. He received the Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Bar and Meritorious Unit Citation. He was a Baptist.
Graveside services were at New Hope Cemetery in Ripley with McBride Funeral Home of Ripley in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors included his wife, Dora Jean Hinson Akins of New Albany; three daughters, Rose Joshlin (Stan Elliott), Angela Hancock (John W.) and Teja Beam (John M.), all of New Albany; two sons, Brian Akins (Cathy) of New Albany and Joseph Wayne Akins of Arkansas; one brother, Jerry Ray Akins of West Memphis, Ark.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tobe and Willie Kimbrell Akins; and several brothers and sisters.
