Frances Gilliam Nowlin, 91, died June 26, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. She was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Union County to William R. and Mattie Bullock Gilliam. She played high school basketball at Macedonia, where she was a member of the team beaten by only one other, placing second in the state behind that team. She retired from the sewing department at Futorian Manufacturing. She was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking for her family, especially for her grandchildren, and watching church services on television.
Services were at United Funeral Service with burial in Glenfield Memorial Park.
Survivors included one daughter, Martha Weathers (Gary) of New Albany; one son, Red Nowlin (Charlotte) of New Albany; one sister, Joan Spencer of Tupelo; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren, nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus O. Nowlin; her parents; five sisters, Lurah V. Grisham, Robbie Cynthia White, Eunice “Blondie” Williams, Mary Elizabeth Gilliam and Willie Clay Gilliam; and two brothers, Frank and Thomas Gilliam.
