Thanks, this must be where the battle took place. My g-g-uncle "James Berry Thompson fought with 114th Illinois Infantry Co. B. His military record states he died on Aug 26, 1863 at Bear Creek, Mississippi. He's buried at Vicksburg National Cemetery, Sect. F Plot 1255. I couldn't find any battle for that area with the specfic name of Bear Creek, so assumed it was a skirmish before or after the Battle of Vicksburg.
