Response to my question on the behavior of James Owen Rigby from Virginia (Ginny) Rigby:
No, Susan, I don't feel that James was a bad fellow. According to a copy of deed that I have, He paid Bryant and Lydia for the property he got from them in Lauderdale County. Some of his family remember that he doctored the wounded soldiers. I don't know if he ever joined the war, but in the 1860 census he had about 7 children, all at home with him and Susan. there was another girl living there with them , a Margaret Hays, who was born in Ala, and who was 2 years older than Susan Rigby. She and the first child of James O. and Susan were listed as "having fits". I think this meant that they were afflicted with epilepsy, which people didn't understand at that time. Two more children were born after the 1860 census. I think something happened to Susan, and maybe also to James O. between 1860 and 1870. I think that is why the children were scattered about. I know that Russell Owen Rigby, James Owen's son grew up at Mary A. Rigby's and lived near her and her family all of his life. He and Mollie had about 8 girls and one boy. Two of the girls died young and the other 6 became teachers. The lone son, Owen Compton Rigby, became a doctor in La. and his son also became a doctor.T here were a couple of Rigby names in the Lauderdale County Tax records that I haven't connected yet,BUT, Bryant and Lydia had a couple of boys that I don't have a good handle on. This is by counting heads in the pre 1850 censuses. They could have died, or just been out of pocket for a while. I'll have to get back to you later,

Andrew Jackson Smith volunteered September 29, 1861 at Shieldsboro for service in the 3rd MS Regiment. Mustered into service at Camp Clark at Bay St. Louis, MS, he was a private in Capt. W. H. Morgan's Company, the Sunflower Dispersers. Beginning in July 1862, he is listed as a seargent in the (new) Company B. Over the next year he was promoted from 4th seargent to second seargent. However, on July 31, 1863 he is reported as absent without leave. He might have gone home to help his family. There is a story that he and a neighbor returned home at night and to surprise the families, working together they plowed their gardens.
On August 19, 1863 he's given as a patient at Loring's Division Hospital, Lauderdale, MS. He returned to duty September 4, 1863. Effective on October 1, 1863 he was reduced in rank to private. Thereafter he is listsed in the (new) Company A. Then on Christmas Day 1864 he was captured by the Union forces at Pulaski, Tennesssee.
On the Saturday before the first Sabbath in February 1869, A. J. Smith was given license to preach, and on June 18, 1872 was called as minister of the Palestine Regular Baptist Church of Christ in Montrose, MS.

Barbara Knotts told me that Sarah Nixon was Creek (Native American). She was supposedly an orphan adopted by her father. Barbara will send information and some photos that my include a photo of Sarah Nixon Smith. This would make Lucinda Smith 1/2 Creek and James S. Walley, Jr. 1/4 Creek, Papaw 1/8 Creek and mother 1/16 Creek.
Sarah Nixon and her brother, William Nixon (b. 1827 or 1837) according to family legend were orphan Native Americans. Because SE AL and SW Georgia was controlled by Creeks, it was assumed that they were members of that tribe.

In addition to farming, Reddick began to preach in Baptist churses. In Jasper Co. he and his son Jackson helped organize the Palestine Baptist Church. One of them gave the land on which the present church stands.
