An 1860's murder mystery

I may be opening a "can of worms", so to speak, but I am seeking information on an unknown indiviual. My grandmother, Rhoda Bell Pitts Farnham of Jones County's grandfather disappeared into Louisiana and Texas after reportedly killing a cousin in Wayne County in the 1860s. My GGGrandfather was known as "Monroe", maybe James Monroe Pitts, and later was said to have changed his name to William Walden Pitts. I don't know any more about the cousin other than what I've stated. GGGrandfather Pitts went to Texas and began a new family, and when my GGrandpa showed up as a teenager to see his father, he stayed one day and was sent home.
I ask these questions to try and establish more of the story and in hope of finding his whereabouts in Texas as well. After hearing this story, I found a James M Pitts in the 1850 Jones County census married to Alethat Walters as reported. I also found in Perry County, a WW or William Walden living with his parents, John and Nancy Pitts. In the 1860 Jones Co. census, I found a 6 year old Waldin Pitts living in the home of Hanson A Walters, which seemed to substantiate the story. I checked the 1860 Perry County census and found a William or WW Pitts with wife Sarah and a William son of the same age as the one in Jones County. I am very much confused about it all. Does anyone into Wayne County history know of a relative that was killed and fit the story I've related?
