Shelby Gentry was born on September 5, 1847 in Shelby Co. AL. He died on March 24, 1926 in Webster Co. and is buried in the Springhill Cemetery. He was the son of Allen Gentry and Sabrina Jane Coker Calloway. Sabrina had been previously married to Beverly Turpin Calloway in Shelby Co. AL and had a small child, Lucy Calloway who married William Carver. Therefore, Lucy Calloway was a half sister to Shelby Gentry. She was a widow with a small child when Allen Gentry married her. Shelby Gentry married Martha McKinney about 1869 in Choctaw Co. MS (now Webster Co.). They had the following children:

1) Ida Gentry, born about 1870.
2) Lillie B. Gentry, born about 1872
3) William Gentry, born about 1874
4) Samuel Gentry, born about 1876
5) Elmer Gentry, born about 1880.
