Wilkinson co Mississippi/West Georgia 1760-1830

I have ben told that the prestday state of Mississippi (including Natches) was called West Georgia before 1803. If so, when and for how long ?

I'm looking for James Hamilton (abt 1760--Nov 1818), he died in Wilkinson co., MS. His son James F. Hamilton (abt 1785--Oct 10 1848) married June 18 1811 in Wilkinson co., MS then moved to West Feliciana Parish, LA April 12 1825 and died there.

Seeing as they were both born before 1803, if they were born in Wilkinson co.; would it be listed as Wilkinson co., MS or Wilkinson co., W. GA ?
