Henry Lechmere and Martha Burdeshaw Cooke

Wish to correspond and trade information with the descendants of HENRY LECHMERE COOKE born 22 Dec 1809 in New Bern, Craven, North Carolina, and died 11 Oct 1885 in Ellis County, Texas. He married MARTHA BURDESHAW3 25 Dec 1834 in Tipton County, Tennessee, daughter of JAMES BURDESHAW and ELLEN. She was born 02 Jan 1815 in Abbeville Dist., South Carolina, and died 13 Feb 1893 in Ellis County, Texas.

Henry Lechmere had twelve brothers and sisters. Two of his brothers, Thomas and Francis Jarvis Cooke fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. Henry did not make the trip to Texas with his family in 1835. He had married Martha the year before, December 25, 1834 at Tipton County, Tennessee. Instead, Henry Lechmere went to Yalobusha County, Mississippi, where he taught school for over twenty years in the early 1800's. He joined his family in Texas in 1856, bringing their children, slaves, and other relatives - one being his brother William G. Cooke. He settled on Mustang Creek in Ellis County He was a school teacher who taught in a log cabin behind the church of Little Bethel, a Baptist church, organized in 1859. He and Martha were both charter members.

He and wife, Martha are buried Boren Cemetary, Reagor Springs, Texas
