In working on my own BARHAM genealogy in SE Virginia, I've run across Paul BARHAM, a brother of my 2nd gr-grandfather--Theophilus G. BARHAM--who went to Yazoo Co., MS, in 1855, under the guardianship of an uncle, John T. JUDKINS. Paul BARHAM (full name Augustus Paul G. Barham) was born in 1837 in Southampton Co., VA, and lost his father George A. C. BARHAM that year. Paul's uncle, John T. JUDKINS, was a brother to Paul's mother Hannah Moody Judkins BARHAM. Paul BARHAM served in the Civil War in Co. I, 1st MS Lt. Artillery (Bowman's Battery) mustered from the Yazoo area. He appears on both the 1860 and 1870 census, and then disappears. He'd married Ida WHITEHEAD in a neighboring county, though she doesn't appear in the 1870 census, suggesting that she either died or was divorced.
John T. JUDKINS was born around 1812 in Southampton Co., VA, and is believed to be a son of William and Margaret Wallace JUDKINS of Southampton and later Sussex Co., VA. John T. Judkins married widow Martha (ne Francis) Drewry in 1841, and is present in Yazoo Co. with her and a stepdaughter Frances Drewry in 1850. John T. and Martha JUDKINS appear again in 1860 in Yazoo, and go missing for the 1870. John T. JUDKINS reappears in 1880 with a new and much younger wife, suggesting that Martha had died in the interim period. It is assumed that John T. JUDKINS died prior to the 1900 census. I noticed a Judkins Road running SW of Yazoo City on the current map, and wondered if there were some connection. Perhaps not, but maybe.
Any help with further info regarding Paul and Ida BARHAM, as well as John T. and Martha JUDKINS, especially land and death records/cemetery data, would be most helpful. Since Paul BARHAM's grandfather William JUDKINS was his initial guardian in Southampton Co., VA, it makes sense that William's son John T. JUDKINS in Yazoo Co., MS, would become his guardian upon arrival in MS.
