A biography/family history of Mathew McLain, lawman, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3. Mathew was born, 27 Jul 1887, to Hugh and Eliza (McBride) McLain, native of County Down, IR, b. 1865 and 1867, respectively. Hugh came to the US as a young man and worked principally as a brick and stone mason in Illinois & Iowa. He died at Chicago, 20 Apr 1894, and Eliza died in 1887, they being only 28 and 20 years old, respectively, at their death. Two children: Ella Jane (Mrs. C.B. Lineweaver), Havre, MT, and Mathew McLain, Havre, MT. After the death of his parents, Mathew was taken by his grandparents, Samuel and Mary (Jackson) McLain, and raised in Iowa. In 1908, Mathew began traveling through ND, IA, and MN, earning his living where he found it. In Jan 1912, he located to a homestead near Havre, MT. He was elected sheriff of Hill County on 5 Nov 1918. On 12 Jan 1912, Mathew married Miss Jessie Peterson, born in Minnesota. Children: Opal E.; Orville; Norman; Gladys. Mathew McLain died 21 Feb 1951, age 64, Havre, MT. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
