It is good to hear from you. I would suggest that your ancestor might be from the US. Except that when my cousin was visiting her son who was working in Scotland, she was on a tour and she mentioned to their guide that her mother was a McElroy (she thought that was the way it was supposed to be spelled even though it was really Muckleroy). The guide said it wasn't McElroy, but Muckleroy. He didn't spell it, but that was how he pronounced it.
My Muckleroy family was big on naming after the family, but John is a nice Bibical name. If you find a connection to our US branch, there any number of us who will share information.
