From the Mudd Family of The United States by Doctor Richard
Dyer Mudd Vol. I, pages 5-6.
It has been stated that the name Mudd was derived from the
Anglo-Saxon Mod, signifying force, Pride or coyrage. Robert
Ferguson, in a book entitled "English Surnames and their place in the Teutonic Surnames and their place in the Teutonic Family(as reported by Alfred Mudge in "memorials-
a genealogical account of Mudge in America from 1638-1868" states: of names derived from courage, vigor, and spirit are probably Mowatt, Mouth, Moth, Motte corresponding with old high Muato, and perhaps Mode, Mudd and the deminitives Muddock, Muddle, Mudge from the Anglo-Saxon form Mod, thence also Moody or Moodie, Anglo-Saxon Modig, corageous."
