unfortunately, I have only hearesay to report. Someone in my branch of the Mulgrew's went to Ireland (probably in the 1920's or '3o's) to do some research. Most records had been destroyed in the big Dublin fire - but they came back with the idea that the name had been French - possibly deMagreu (unknown spelling). The poorer members of the family thought it was just reported to appear "better" - still smarting from the stories of "Irish need not apply" - but perhaps there is something to the story after all.
