As with much of this, John T's parentage cannot be proven with records, at least, not so far. He was born March 9, 1852, which was 2 years before Berry married Martha Weekly. Family tradition, as well as the pretty informative "Burch, Harrell and Allied Families" lists Berry as the father of Willie Elbert and John T.
By the way, your response indicated yoou have found several Elbert's in Georgia after 1870. I had indicated that I had noted a Berry in North Carolina. Our Elbert, rest his soul, died in a jail fire in Eastman.
I agree with you that it appears that Elbert and John T. were both shown in Newton Mullis' household in 1870 census. Don't have a clue as to why. It appears these two may have been passed around from relative to relative.
I also agree with you about Berry's parents. Just can't prove it.
May I ask your connection to this Mullis line????
