My Aunt is actually the one who traced our family heritage. She started on it many years ago and I have just recently joined her in the effort to find our ancestors. I have some information on James Mullis' parents. What we have been able to track so far is the following:

Father: John Mullis, b. 1774 in Lancaster County/Colony, Virginia, d. 1817-18, Shelby County, Illinois.

Mother: Geriah Barnes, b. 1784 in North Carolina, d. 1872, Shelby County Illinois.

If you try to search a combination of John and Geriah, you will recieve several responses that match both their names and the time frame. My Aunt already had John's information, but it took me several hours to track who his wife could have been and this is the only combination that matched. I bookmarked the ancestry page that I found this information at and will forward it to you as soon as I can if you want to verify the information. We are still trying to track down Luvisa's last name. I'll keep you posted.
