My grandfather Robert Mumby married Jessie Dawson and they lived in Tetney, Lincolnshire for the first 10 years of their life where Robert had been born to a farming family. Jessie had a brother, Hedley Dawson, a great cartoonist, who died at sea during the war. Robert Mumby had 4 brothers, some of whom moved to and raised families in Holton le Clay. Due to a family feud the brothers never spoke to each other after 1930 or thereabouts. Robert started farming at Hall Farm, Ashby cum Fenby just before the start of WWW II and raised his family and lived his life successfully in the place he loved until his death in 1981.
I recently moved to Bath with my partner so that I could take my place as a barrister in chambers in nearby Bristol. My partner and I now have our own commercial website at http://www.supermarketsuk.co.uk and we would love to hear from any Mumby's who may be out there with information about themselves and contacts that they may have had with the Mumby's of Tetney or Ashby cum Fenby.
The amount of fascinating histories I have found on this site convince me that we may all be able to connect our histories - and hopefully, in some ways - our futures. I sincerely hope so. Like others, I welcome inquiries and could ask further questions of close relatives in search of answers.
Like all Mumbys I am fascinated to know the origin of the name and at the moment believe that it was first recorded near Alford in Lincolnshire. I would welcome confirmation or otherwise.
