I too am related to Joseph Murray, however my records indicate that my Joseph was born in 1799 in Montreal, Canada. My cousin obtained all the information I have regarding Joseph, so I can only share what he has given me, which is the following:

Apparently Joseph Jr. spoke only French. Both he and his father took brides of French descent (Beauchamp and Houle). And at that time, young men most often married "of their own kind" as only a wife of similar heritage and background would know the customs, traditional foods, expectations, etc., of the groom's upbringing.

In the Canadian Registry of Families there is record of Louis Miray and Angelique of Normandie. It also indicates variations of spelling as DeMuray or Murrat. It was very common during this time to carry on family names, and the name Louis appears in three consecutive generations, though the spelling is different.

You could be on to something here, so please keep me posted.
