John Milton Wright

Joel,

This is a printout from my database of all I have about John Milton Wright (so the wording gets repetitive). The numbers in brackets would be footnotes in superscript in a word processing program - you will find them as endnotes at the end of the text.

Since John isn't my direct line, I haven't followed up much on what is here. For instance, much of the detail, other than the census data, comes from a brief biography in the Van Wert & Mercer County history. To search further, I would suggest that you check Mercer County deeds and wills, as well as the county history. There are more censuses that can be checked - for instance, I have nothing further on John Craft - you may find him and any kids in the 1870 and following censuses, but since Mary Jane apparently died in 1866, you won't find her in the census.

I just checked the book of cemetery inscriptions for Center & Union Townships published by the Mercer County Chapter of OGS. In Row 4 of Hankins Cemetery, Center Twp, buried next to each other are John Craft 1836-1909, Mary Jane Craft 1838-1866, and Antoinette J. Craft 1848-1902.

Good Luck, Linda

Descendants of John Milton Wright

Generation One
1. John Milton1 Wright; born 1 Nov 1810 Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio (date calculated from age at date of death gives 31 October 1810; state of birth given);[1,2] or born 19 Nov 1810;[3] married Caraline Murlin, daughter of John Murlin and Sarah Dodderer, 5 Jan 1833 Mercer County, Ohio;[4,5,6,3,7] married Sarah Ellen Gordon 18 Feb 1847 Mercer County, Ohio (abstract of marriage records gives date as 17 February);[8,3,9,10] died 21 Oct 1896 Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio, at age 85 (The cause of death was consumption at age 85 years 11 months and 21 days. [Identification of this J. M Wright who died in 1896 with the John Wright in the 1870 & 1880 census is purely based on same middle initial, approximate birth dates matching and place of residence in Mercer County - LCK]).[1]
He was a farmer.[1,11] He was also known as Milton Wright.[5] He came with his parents (father was Abel Wright) between 1830 and 1846 to Eight-Mile Creek near Bethel Church, Union Township, Mercer County, Ohio; Abel moved to Neptune in 1846 where he died two years later.[9] John bought land on Dec 1842 Section 30, Union Township, Mercer County, Ohio and farmed there for 36 years, until he moved to Center township.[9] He was widowed by the death of Caraline Murlin on 17 Oct 1843 Mercer County, Ohio.[3,9] He and his second wife Sarah Ellen Gordon had 11 children, 9 surviving (5 boys and 4 girls).[3,9]
John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1850 Union Twp., Mercer County, Ohio. John M. a farmer age 39 with real estate valued at $700, heads a household with Sarah age 20, and 4 children: Francis (male) age 14, Mary age 12, Miles age 3, and Almira age 1 month; Sarah was born in Kentucky, all the others were born in Ohio. The Wrights are enumerated just a few families away from A.D. Murlin.[12]
John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1870 Shanes Crossing P.O., Union Township, Mercer County, Ohio. John M., a farmer age 59 with real estate worth $5000 and $870 in personal property, heads a household with Sarah E age 48 keeping house and 8 children: Almira age 20 at home, John H. age 17 and Enos L. age 15 both working on the farm, Mariah L. age 12 at school, Quintilla age 9 at school, Elisha age 7 at school, Hannah J. age 4 and Manirva age 1; all born in Ohio, except Sarah who was born in Kentucky. This family is enumerated near the Thomas Upton, Abraham Cavalt, James Davis, Walter Murlin and James Shepard families.[8] He moved from Union Township in 1878 to Section 1, Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio.[9]
John and Sarah appeared on the census of 1880 Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio. John, a farmer age 70, heads a household with his wife Sarah age 50 keeping house, and 4 children, a son and 3 daughters: Elisha age 17 working on the farm, Hannah J. age 14, Minerva age 11 and Sarah Ellen age 9; Hannah and Minerva are going to school, Sarah is at home; all the children were born in Ohio. John was also born in Ohio (his father in Virginia and his mother in South Carolina); Sarah was born in Kentucky (her father also in Virginia and her mother in Vermont).[13]

The two known children of John Milton1 Wright and Caraline Murlin were as follows:
+       2 i.       Francis M.2 Wright, born 1836; married Nancy J. Matson.
3 ii.       Mary Jane Wright was born circa 1838 Ohio (year estimated from age 12 in 1850 census, born Ohio);[12,14] married John Craft 1 Aug 1861;[14] died 1866.[14]

The 10 known children of John Milton1 Wright and Sarah Ellen Gordon were as follows:

13 x.       Sarah Ellen Wright was born circa 1871 Ohio year estimated from age 9 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[13]

Generation Two

2. Francis M.2 Wright (John1) was born circa 1836 Ohio year estimated from age 14 in 1850 census, born Ohio;12 born 1836;[14] married Nancy J. Matson 7 Sep 1862;[14] died 1909;[14] buried Hankins Cemetery, Mercer County, Ohio.[14]
He appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of his parents.[12] In the census of 1880 Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio "F.M.", a laborer age 45, heads a household with his wife Nancy J., age 36 keeping house and 4 children - 1 son and 3 daughters: Alas L. age 17, Amanda A. age 14, Oral Ettie, age 5, and Thomas M. age 1; everyone was born in Ohio, only Francis' mother is noted as born in Kentucky. Francis is enumerated among 8 Wright families in Center twp.[15] There could easily be more children in this family, since the last information I have about them comes from the 1880 census.

The four known children of Francis M.2 Wright and Nancy J. Matson all born Ohio were as follows:
14 i.       Alas L.3 Wright was born circa 1863 year estimated from age 17 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[15]
15 ii.       Amanda A. Wright was born circa 1866 year estimated from age 14 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[15]
16 iii.       Oral Ettie Wright was born circa 1875 year estimated from age 5 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[15]
17 iv.       Thomas M. Wright was born circa 1879 year estimated from age 1 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[15]

4. Miles2 Wright (John1) was born circa 1847 Ohio year estimated from age 3 in 1850 census, born Ohio;[12] born 1847;[14] married Lydia A. Wymans 21 Mar 1872.[14]
He appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of his parents.[12] He and Lydia A. Wymans appeared on the census of 1880 Center Township, Mercer County, Ohio. Miles, farmer age 32, heads a household with his wife Lydie Ann age 32 keeping house and 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter: Charles C. age 5, Effa Elina age 4, and William age 8 months; also part of the household is Henry Craft age 27 working on the farm. All were born in Ohio except Henry (born NJ); Miles mother was born in KY. This family is enumerated close to Miles' parents, John & Sarah Wright.[16] Again, it is likely there are more children in this family since the last information I have about them is the 1880 census.

The three known children of Miles2 Wright and Lydia A. Wymans all born Ohio were as follows:
18 i.       Charles C.3 Wright was born circa 1875 year estimated from age 5 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[16]
19 ii.       Effa Elina Wright was born circa 1876 year estimated from age 4 in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[16]
20 iii.       William Wright was born circa Oct 1879 date estimated from age 8 months in 1880 census index, born Ohio.[16]
