Jacob Murph of SC/GA born between 1740-50
Posted by: Malcolm Murff (ID *****7297) Date: May 31, 2010 at 12:15:31
  of 73

In the 1790 census of Orangeburg district, a Jacob Murph was listed as head of household with two males over 16; four males under 16; and five females. The time span between the late 1740's and 1790 (approximately 40 years) would somewhat match the above marriage and births. The five males have all been accounted for in the birth of his sons as follows: Henry b-1773; John b-1781; Jacob b-1782; George b-1785; Conrad b-1786. Of course the four girls were born during the intervening years. Catherine was born about 1778 and married John Caver in 1798. Who were the other three girls and who did they marry ??
Jacob Murph was reflected as having 350 acres of property located on the Savannah river, Lincoln County, GA as early as 1818. On Aug 27, Jacob Murph Sr deeded some land to Jacob Murph Jr. Data from the 1850 census of Lincoln County reveals that Jacob Murph Jr and John Murph, his brother continued their residence there.
According to the 1830 census of Lincoln County, GA. Jacob Murph and his wife were both listed as being between 80 and 90 years old. This reveals a birth between 1740 and 1750.
This Jacob Murph was most likely the son of the senior Jacob Morf that arrived Dec 1749 in Charleston, SC on the ship Greenwich (Capt was Randolph). Jacob's petition for land in Jan 1750 indicated that he had a wife and child and was entitled for 150 acres which was given to him on the north side of 4-holes swamp near others of his contrymen. This is also the same Jacob Morf that married Christianna Hess in the Orangeburg church on 8 June 1750. Apparently his first wife had died and he had need of a wife quickly.
I desire to communicate with anyone who can add to the above family history - especially the names and marriages of the other girls in the family mentioned above.
