Grace May Murrow, 89, daughter of Etta Almeda (Hayes) and Phillip George Uhl, was born in western Woods County in the Edith Community on Jan. 5, 1913.She passed away as a result of an automobile accident on April 7, 2002.
She attended the Day Creek Rural Grade School near Lookout and worked with her parents on the farm.
On Dec. 3, 1931, Miss Uhl was married to James Eugene Murrow at Coldwater, Kan.To their marriage three daughters, Wilma Jean, LaVida Mae and Lois Yvonne were born.Eugene passed away on March 29th of this year.
Following their marriage they lived in Campo. Colo., where they farmed and ranch[ed].In 1934 they returned to Oklahoma to the Lookout Community in western Woods County, and in 1938 they moved into the Cora Community where they farmed.While Gene was on the road grader, she did the farming.In 1973 they retired and moved to Alva.Grace regard[ed] cooking as an art and a joy.She cooked for family gatherings, and made cinnamon rolls for her grandchildren and fried chicken for the campouts.
She attended the Alva Church of the Nazarent, helping the church ladies with meals.She was a member of the United Neighbors Club, having received a 50 year pin.
Mrs. Murrow was preceded in death by a great grandchild, Sarah Elizabeth Stroud; her parents, five sisters, Edna Cato, Stella Dory, Emma Brunkest, Bessie Williams and Dollie Wood; and four brothers, Will, Fred, George and Frankie.
Grace is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Wilma Jean and Jack Johnson of Liberal, Kan., LaVida Mae and Elmo Anderson of Helena, and Lois Yvonne and Charles Nieman of Alva; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Jackie and Jean Johnson of Plains, Kan., Gary and Holly Anderson of Jakarta, Indonesia, Jeanette and Wesley Grant of Houston, Texas, Lynnette and James Bryant of Konawa, Debbie Stroud of Alva, Janella mendenhall of Yukon, Roger and Dr. Cathy Nieman of Stillwater, and Jess and Sherri Nieman of Ralston; seventeen great grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Tara Grant of Kismet, Kan., Jason and Jenna Johnson of Hays, Kan., Emily and Graig [sic] Cheek and Julie and Josh Kiker of Ada, Jeremy Johnson of Hays, Kan., Jacob Grant of Syracuse, Kan., Matthew Bryant of Konawa, Kimberly Stroud of Alva, Evan Anderson of Lafayette, La., Chris Anderson of Slidell, La., Brett mendenhall of Yukon, Cody Nieman of Ralston, Adam and Sarah Grant, Eric Stroud, Matthew, Andrew and Elizabeth Nieman, all of Stillwater; five great great grandchildren, Bailey, Mackenzie and Sydney Grant, all of Kismet, Kan., Morgan and Kyndal Cheek of Ada.She is also survived by a sister Irene Newkirk of Republic, Mo.; a brother, Jim Uhl and his wife Vernie and a sister-in-law, Wilhelmine Gum, all of Alva; a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Alva Church of the Nazarene with Rev. William Kalfas, pastor, officiating.Interment will be in the Alva Municipal Cemetery.Wharton Funeral Chapel of Alva is in charge of arrangements.
