Port of Entry for Matthew Murtagh (Ellen Fagan) from Westmeath
Posted by: Louise Murtagh (ID *****7979) Date: March 19, 2011 at 14:54:58

My mother-in-law's extensive search into the Murtagh history was unable to locate a port of entry for Matthew but did find that he was naturalized American in 1840. We do know that in the 1831 census he was already living on a large track of land in Chazy (Clinton Co.) NY (now part of the town of Altona). To this day, the road leading to the heart of what was the homestead is called "Murtagh Hill".

I'm looking for evidence that Matthew came in through NY and moved North or came in through Canada and came south. Any info appreciated.
