Michael Murtaugh, born in 1838 in Ireland, lived in Chatsworth, Illinois with his brother Owen Murtaugh. In 1861, he joined the United States Army, Illinois Infantry, 20th, Company D and was mustered in June 1861 from Pontiac, IL. He was with this unit until they fought in the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6-7, 1862. Michael was killed as a result of gunshot wounds to his legs and is believed to be buried in the Pontiac City Cemetery with a government headstone. Does anyone have knowledge of this cemetery, its location or how to locate his grave?
