Pontiac City Southside Cemetery located at 400 Locust Street is the site of a headstone memorializing Michael Murtaugh of Company D, 20th Illinois Infantry who was killed on 6 April 1862 during the first day of Battle of Shiloh, Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee. The headstone is among many placed around a monument with a standing soldier. It was dedicated in 1901 by Post 105 of the Grand Army of the Republic and memorializes those soldiers from Livingstone County who went to war but whose remains were never returned. Undoubtedly, Michael and his colleagues were buried where they fell.
