Mary Smith Alexander was the daughter of William Smith and Ann Follin Murtishaw. Ann had married George B. Murtishaw on 14 Feb. 1831. She was the daughter Of Samuel Follin.
George died and Ann married Willim Smith. You can find this family on page 76 of the 1850 Union County, SC 1850 census. Page 173/271 of the 1860 Union Co. census. Page 570 of the 1870 Union Co. census. Page 21/570 of the 1880 Union Co. census. On all of these censuses Mary has a sister, Nancy(Nannie). Nancy married Robert Coleman.
On the 1900 Union Co. census these families are on page 84A
in Jonesville. Enumeration District 70.
Robert Coleman, his wife Nannie and their sons Roland and Harry are listed as family #73. Calvin Alexander and his wife, Mary, are listed as family #74. Living with Calvin and Mary are Willie born Aug 1889 and Gertrude born April 1891. Willie and Gertrude's last name appears to be Littall. Their relationship to the head of the family is listed as "servant".
On the 1910 Gertrude and Willie are listed with C.C. and Mary Alexander on page 103B of the Union Co. census Enumeration District 115. The relationship of Willie and Gertrude to the head of the household was cousin. Also,
listed with this family are Mary's sister Sallie, and her half brother W.H. Mudashaw (Murtishaw).
On page 191, sheet 28A, enumeration District 101 of the 1920 Spartanburg County the following is listed:
Exelander(?), Calvin C. age 69
Mary C. wife, age 72
Tisdale, Odell age 25, weaver cotton mill
Gertrude wife, age 28
Elexander son, age 6
Alphonso son, age 5
Clyde son, age 3 1/2
Mary daughter, age 7/12
Smith, Sally boarder, age 70
All born SC as were their parents.
