missing Murtishaw/Wilson in GA, 1860s?

I am attempting to do the impossible: find the birth father of my ggrandfather, JOHN T.(THOMAS) WILSON and his birth sister MALISSA BELLE (she was called by BELLE) WILSON. These two siblings were adopted into the Wilson family in GA before 1870. The circumstances of their adoption are unknown. This much is known: The story has come down that our original last name was Murtishaw or Myrtleshaw (we are talking about oral history, and mispronunciations are bound to occur). Also, our family story says that John T.'s father was from SC, and was a Cherokee Indian, or at least 1/2 blood quantum. And that he served in the Civil War, in a cavalry unit, and was killed in 1862. Can any Murishaw help with this? Any assistance will be gratefully appreciated.
