You might want to look for either William Chappell Musslewhite or Chappell William Musslewhite. Also if looking for Native American lineage you might look in the Choctaw lines. I don't think they were Cherokee. It will take a lot of digging unless someone out there is willing to give you information on the family.
But you are going about it in the right way. Post lots of queries all over. Another state to look in is Georgia.
