Is my surname Musselwhite or White?

There has been "word of mouth" rumors in my family for years that our surname was changed from Musselwhite to White many generations ago. My grandfather's name was Wesley Mussel White, and 4 of his 5 sons had the middle name Mussel. He supposedly was from the area of Anniston, Al and was born circa 1885. He married Armanda Jane Meadows from Carrol Co., GA and they had 11 children. Later they moved to West Monroe, LA where he died circa 1939.

Does anyone have information that would help me trace the lineage of Wesley Mussel White?
