Donald for a long time I scratched my head on this one too. My grandmother always told me her father's family name was Musselwhite, but that it had been shortened to M.White and finally to just White. When I went to Mobile to do research decades ago I located a legal form great great grandfather had signed. Guess what? He signed that legal document Musselwhite. It all seems to depend on if it was a legal document or not. In the censuses they are M. White and then White. No Musselwhites as far back as 1820. It is a wonderful puzzle.
