Lynnville appears on a Confederate Muster-In Roll as enlisting on August 5, 1861 in Knoxville, TN to fight in the Civil War.Upon enlisting, he had to rendezvous 75 miles to get to his assigned unit.He was a Private in Capt. W.T. Gass' Company, Brazelton's Batt'n, Tennessee Cavalry. This same unit was successively designated as Company C, 3d Battalion, Tennessee Calvary and Company E, 3d Battalion Tennessee Calvary while Lynnville was enlisted.
He was originally enlisted by Col. Jas. W. Gillespie for 12 months. In the remarks section of one of his Muster-In Rolls, he is listed as "Absent without leave in Rhea Co. since Aug. 20, 1862".This would lead one to believe he went AWOL.However, since his initial enlistment date was over a year prior, that conclusion does not seem substantiated.
