There are records at the National Archive Kew. See my reply to "French POW's" from Mary McLoughlin.

When you search the catalogue and get the returns for ADM click on the number, then look down list for ADM 103 click on that then "Browse the catalogue from here" and you will see a full list of POW prisons, hulks etc.

As your ancestor was on Officer he will also be in records of parole prisoners so it narrows things down a bit but in your case you will still probably have to use a researcher.
